![]() ![]() She cares for Danny when they are thrown out of their home by their stepmother. They survive life’s battering and changing personal circumstances. The Dutch House, itself, is a character within this novel of character because the extraordinary house remains a constant in the protagonists’ lives unchanging even though those who have lived there grow and change as people. The story is about both siblings and those who have shared or touched their lives. Danny tells us the story is about his sister, Maeve, but this book is really much, much more than about his sister’s experience. She skilfully characterises Danny’s essence as a small boy, as a young man and as a middle-aged father. The narative is told by Danny whose voice Anne Patchett captures with superb realism. It’s a great American novel about a family that spans five decades and more. The Dutch House is a beautifully constructed novel. The cover is beautiful but the story is extraordinary. ![]() Two-Gun CowleyĪ lesson in what is a common characteristic to all criminal types is provided courtesy of a letter to the world written by Two-Gun Cowley as police were closing in on him in what would be the most violent manhunt in NYC to that date. “even the most violent critic, will frequently soften and be subdued in the presence of a patient, sympathetic listener - a listener who will he silent while the irate fault-finder dilates like a king cobra and spews the poison out of his system. Carnegie uses metaphor to suggest how this can be universally applied to such chronic critics, suggesting: The author tells a story about a chronic complainer whose lawsuits were finally dismissed after a company employee finally just patiently listened to all the man had to rage about. I’d never even heard of the Battle of Blair Mountain in 1921, the largest labor uprising in U.S. This book opened my eyes to a period of time and a series of events that I’ve not previously given much thought to – the struggle of the coal miners and the labor disputes of the early 1900s in West Virginia. I simply can’t imagine what it would have been like to work in the coal mines or to watch a loved one, a father, a husband or a son, disappear into that gaping hole in the earth, wondering if he would return that evening or be lost forever. If the Fates Allow is DEFINITELY a holiday story. (And not a mildly disturbing fairy tale!) I really liked that story, but I felt bad that some readers assumed from the timing that it was a holiday story. Last year, at this time, I wrote a short story called The Prince and the Troll.
